535 Roman Miles In 120 Days
The Virtual race “Via Egnatia Challenge: 535 Roman miles in 120 days” is inspired by the ancient Roman road “Via Egnatia” which is considered to be one of the biggest roads of the ancient world.
The ancient ‘’Via Egnatia’’ was built by the Romans on the tracks of an even more ancient road called the “Kato Odos”. According to Thucydides, “Kato Odos” was used by the Persian king Xerxes during his campaign against Greece in 480 BC. It was also used by Alexander the Great during his campaign in Asia.
The Romans began to build the road that would connect the capital city of the Roman Empire with the East in the 2nd century BC. The road was crossing the Balkan Peninsula starting from present-day Durres, Albania (Ancient Greek city Epidamnos – Corfu colony) and ending in the Kipoi Evrou (Traianoupolis). The street got its name from the viceroy of Macedonia Gnaio Egnatios (Gneus Egnatius).
According to the Greek geographer Strabo (63 BC – 23 AD) ‘’Via Egnatia’’ was completed around 120 BC and its length was 535 Roman miles.
